Rattle Tum A Gipsum Davy

Here's an old folk song I recorded last year and then completely forgot about:

I learned it from a collection called Songs Of Man. My reading's not too good, but folk songs are simple enough that I can puzzle them out from sheet music.

The older I get, the more I love folk songs. I mean real folk songs, not the Indigo Girls, nor even Simon & Garfunkel. The melodies feel so eternal and the stories are so rich.

The thing I like the most about this recording is my tambourine playing.  I like to think a gypsy might give it a nod.

The Gipsum Davy

It was late in the night when the squire came home
Inquiring for his lady.
His servant gave a sure reply,
"She's gone with the Gipsum Davy."

"Oh go catch up my milk-white steed,
The black one's not so speedy.
I'll ride all night 'til broad daylight
Or overtake my lady!"

He rode and he rode 'til he came to town
He rode 'til he came to Barley.
The tears came a-rolling down his face
When there he spied his lady.

It's "Come back home, my dearest dear.
Oh, come back home my honey.
Oh come go back, my dearest dear,
And you never shall lack for money."

"I won't go back my dearest dear,
No I won't go back my honey.
For I wouldn't give a kiss from the gypsy's lips
For you and all your money."

Then off she took her snow white gloves
All made of Spanish leather.
And gave to him her lily-white hand
And bade goodbye forever.

"Oh once I had a house and land
A feather bed and money.
But now I've come to an old straw pad
With the gypsies dancing 'round me."
